The Rolex Air-King ref. 116900 represented the most dramatic transformation in the model's history when it was introduced in 2016. After the previous 34mm generation ended, Rolex brought the Air-King back as a 40mm Oystersteel sports watch, giving it an entirely new visual identity.

Its dial is the defining feature. Inspired by Rolex's professional instrument watches, it combines large applied 3, 6 and 9 numerals with minute markers running around the dial and distinctive green and yellow detailing. The unusual 5-10-3-20-25-6-35-40-9-50-55 numeral arrangement gives the watch an unmistakably technical appearance, while the case shares design characteristics with the Milgauss.

Inside is Rolex calibre 3131, an automatic movement with anti-magnetic properties, reinforcing the technical character of the watch. The result was an Air-King unlike any that had come before it.

It is an Icon because the 116900 completely reinvented the Air-King — transforming a traditional 34mm Oyster into one of Rolex's most recognisable modern instrument-style watches.
