14000
The Rolex Air-King ref. 14000 marked the beginning of the modern sapphire-crystal era for the collection. Introduced in 1989 as the successor to the long-running 5500, it retained the familiar 34mm Oystersteel case but introduced a sapphire crystal and Rolex calibre 3000.
The transition was significant. After more than 30 years of acrylic crystals and the traditional “Air-King / Precision” dial arrangement, the 14000 brought the collection into the contemporary Rolex era. Its cleaner dial typography, sapphire crystal and modern movement gave the watch a sharper and more refined appearance while preserving the compact proportions that had defined the Air-King.
The reference was also notable for its unusually broad selection of dial configurations, giving collectors numerous ways to find the Air-King in a more individual form.
It is an Icon because the 14000 bridges two generations of Rolex — preserving the classic 34mm Air-King while introducing the sapphire crystal and modern movement technology that would define its successors.
