The Rolex Air-King ref. 5500 is the defining vintage Air-King and one of the longest-running references in Rolex history. Introduced in 1957, the 5500 remained in production for more than three decades, establishing the understated 34mm Oyster case, smooth bezel and clean three-hand configuration that would become synonymous with the Air-King. Early examples were fitted with calibre 1530, while later watches used calibre 1520, with dial variations including the familiar “Air-King / Precision” configuration.

What makes the 5500 particularly interesting to collectors is the enormous variety of dials produced during its long production run. Alongside conventional silver, black and white dials were unusual signed examples, special-order watches and rare configurations with Explorer-style 3-6-9 numerals. The reference also shares an important connection with the Rolex Explorer, with certain 5500 examples displaying the same distinctive 3-6-9 layout associated with Rolex's early sports watches.

It is an Icon because the 5500 is the Air-King in its purest vintage form — a simple, durable Rolex Oyster that remained remarkably consistent for more than 30 years.
