Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke”

The Rolex GMT-Master II “Coke” occupies a particularly important place in the history of the GMT collection. The colourway first appeared with reference 16760, introduced in the 1980s as the first GMT-Master II and affectionately known to collectors as the “Fat Lady” because of its thicker case profile. Its red-and-black 24-hour bezel created the visual identity that would become known as the Coke. More importantly, the 16760 introduced the GMT-Master II's independently adjustable local-hour hand, allowing the wearer to read multiple time zones with greater practicality. It was followed by reference 16710, produced through the 1990s and into the 2000s, which could be configured with the red-and-black Coke bezel alongside other bezel options. The 16710 therefore represents one of the last generations of aluminium-bezel GMT-Master II watches before Rolex moved decisively into the ceramic era.

For collectors, the Coke has a character that is distinctly different from both the Pepsi and the modern Batman. The combination of black and red gives the watch a darker, more understated presence, while the aluminium bezel inserts of the vintage and neo-vintage references develop individuality through age and patina. The 16760 is particularly significant as the inaugural GMT-Master II, while the 16710 is prized for its versatility, classic proportions and final-generation aluminium construction. Rolex subsequently moved away from the Coke configuration when the six-digit ceramic GMT-Master II generation arrived. It is an Icon because it represents a pivotal chapter in the evolution of the GMT-Master II — combining one of Rolex's most important technical developments with one of its most enduring collector colourways.
