The Rolex James Cameron is one of the most distinctive and technically impressive modern Rolex dive watches. The story began in 2012, when James Cameron successfully completed a solo dive to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, reaching a depth of 10,908 metres aboard the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER. Two years later, in 2014, Rolex introduced the ref. 116660 D-Blue Deepsea to commemorate the expedition. Its distinctive dial transitions from brilliant blue to deep black, representing the gradual disappearance of light as depth increases. The watch retained the 44mm Deepsea case and its remarkable 3,900-metre water resistance.

In 2018, Rolex introduced the ref. 126660, bringing the D-Blue Deepsea into a new generation. The watch retained the distinctive gradient dial and 44mm case while receiving redesigned lugs and bracelet proportions, together with the new-generation Calibre 3235 movement. The D-Blue configuration continued to be associated with James Cameron and became firmly established among modern Rolex collectors.

In 2022, Rolex introduced the ref. 136660, bringing further refinements to the Deepsea while retaining the iconic D-Blue dial. The updated model continued with the 44mm Oystersteel case, 3,900-metre water resistance and Calibre 3235, alongside changes including a redesigned bezel and a larger date aperture without the traditional Cyclops lens.

“James Cameron” is a collector nickname rather than an official Rolex model name. It refers specifically to the Deepsea models featuring Rolex’s distinctive D-Blue dial, created in tribute to Cameron’s historic expedition.

Together, the 116660, 126660 and 136660 D-Blue represent the evolution of one of Rolex’s most technically capable watches. Combining extreme engineering with a dial inspired by the depths of the ocean, the James Cameron has become one of the most recognisable and distinctive modern Rolex icons.
