Rolex Submariner “Kermit”

The Rolex Submariner “Kermit” is one of the most recognisable modern Submariners and an important chapter in the evolution of Rolex’s iconic dive watch. Introduced in 2003 as reference 16610LV, the Kermit was created to celebrate the Submariner’s 50th anniversary. Rolex retained the familiar black dial and stainless-steel case but introduced a striking green aluminium bezel insert, giving the anniversary model a distinctive identity. The reference remained in production until 2010 and was powered by Rolex’s calibre 3135, making it both a commemorative model and a fully capable professional dive watch. Its green bezel would ultimately become one of the most recognisable signatures in modern Rolex collecting.

The Kermit occupies an interesting position between vintage-inspired design and modern Rolex production. Unlike the later Hulk, which paired a green bezel with a green dial, the 16610LV retained the classic black Submariner dial, giving it a more restrained and traditional appearance. Collectors also value the relatively short production period and the variations found within the reference, including different bezel and dial configurations. Its anniversary status, distinctive colour and connection to the 50-year history of the Submariner have made the Kermit particularly significant. It is an Icon because it introduced green to the modern stainless-steel Submariner in a way that became central to the model’s identity — creating a reference that is now regarded as one of the defining modern Rolex sports watches.
