Rolex Cosmograph Daytona “Panda”

The Rolex Daytona “Panda” is perhaps the purest expression of the Cosmograph Daytona's racing heritage. The nickname refers to the high-contrast white dial with black chronograph sub-dials, a configuration with roots in Rolex's manual-wind Daytona references including the 6263 and 6265. The aesthetic became particularly powerful in the modern era with reference 116500LN, introduced in 2016. For the first time, Rolex paired its stainless-steel Daytona with a black Cerachrom ceramic tachymeter bezel, creating a dramatic frame around the white dial and black sub-dials. Powered by Rolex's calibre 4130, the 116500LN quickly became one of the defining modern Rolex references and one of the most sought-after steel sports watches of its generation.

In 2023, marking the Daytona's 60th anniversary, Rolex introduced reference 126500LN, refining rather than reinventing the formula. The new generation retained the 40mm proportions and unmistakable Panda configuration but introduced the calibre 4131, a subtly redesigned case and a Cerachrom bezel framed by a thin ring of Oystersteel. For collectors, the 116500LN and 126500LN represent two successive chapters of the modern Daytona, while earlier references provide a direct connection to the model's racing origins. The Panda's appeal goes beyond colour: it brings together Rolex's motorsport heritage, chronograph engineering and one of the most recognisable dial layouts in watchmaking.
